CENTENNIAL VOICES: A HISTORICAL EXHIBITION & RECEPTION

299 Greenwich Avenue, 2nd Floor, Greenwich, CT
A celebration of Greenwich Choral Society’s rich legacy, showcasing archival treasures with an opening reception. The interactive audio/visual exhibition will feature the Choral Society’s music from the various decades, and displays of the composers, conductors, singers and musicians who have been a part of the Choral Society’s stellar history. Visitors can hear the history and samples from performances of the Choral Society’s concerts with smartphones and headphones. A limited supply of headphones will be on-site.The exhibition runs September 14 - October 19 at the Greenwich Arts Council.

Screening: ANTONIA: A PORTRAIT OF THE WOMAN (1974)

Film Screening and Panel Discussion: Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman (1974) tells the inspiring story of trailblazing conductor Antonia Brico, GCS’s conductor, 1934-35, and the first woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic. Co-directed by Judy Collins, this landmark feminist documentary was Oscar-nominated and restored in 2022. Join us for a screening of the film, followed by a panel discussion on women in music and leadership featuring Beth Willer, Associate Professor and Director of Choral Studies at the Peabody Conservatory, Susanne Bona, host and executive producer of Sunday Baroque, and Christine Howlett, Music Director of the Greenwich Choral Society, and Professor of Music on the George Sherman Dickinson Chair and Director of Choral Activities, Vassar College. THE MARVELOUS AND MYSTICAL

Two masterpieces of 20th-century music, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, were both commissioned by the visionary English arts patron, Walter Hussey. The Vassar College Choir joins GCS to perform these works alongside a newly commissioned work by the internationally renowned composer, producer, and Greenwich native, Rob Mathes, written in honor of GCS’s 100th anniversary.
